NHER 26910 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Undated linear features

Cropmarks and earthworks of a series of linear features and a possible enclosure can be seen on 1970 ADAS (S1)-(S2) and 1969 Hunting survey (S3) aerial photographs. The enclosure is formed by a slight bank and it is in the shape of an elongated ‘U’. A slight ditch is discernible along the outside of the eastern side of the enclosure between TF 7044 4340 and TF 7045 4336. At the enclosure’s northern most end (the top of the U) it appears to be open, it is uncertain whether this is the case or whether the rest of the enclosure is hidden due to a different land use to the north of this point (at this point the cropmark reaches the northern end of the field). The enclosure extends between TF 7043 4340 and TF 7044 4333, and is approximately 60m by 16m in size.
To the south of this feature (centred on TF7045 4331) there are several linear features running both north to south and west to east. They range in length from about 15m to 40m. A further linear ditch can be seen a short distance to the east between TF 7050 4338 and TF 7053 4338.
The date and origin of these features are unknown. However, it is possible that some of these coincide with field and strip boundaries shown on the 1722 field map of Holme (S4), and the 1827 Enclosure map of Holme (S5). So this could suggest a post medieval date at least, though an earlier date should not be ruled out.
