Full Description
July 2003. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site of proposed disable access ramp into the Cathedral Cloister. From Context 1.
Three distinct archaeological phases were recorded during this evaluation. The earliest phase encountered comprised two pits which appear to date from the Late Saxon period. The second phase consisted of two flint and mortar walls which were interpreted as the remnants of a medieval structure. This structure is thought to pre-date the slype, as the location and orientation appears to conflict with what is known about the Chapter House and slype. The final phase consisted of rubble make-up which has been interpreted as 19th century landscaping of the area.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.399).
