Full Description
THIS SITE CONTAINS EARTHWORKS PREVIOUSLY RECORDED AS NHER 24200.
July 2001. Norfolk NMP.
Four lengths of ditch visible as shallow earthworks on the 1946 (S1) and 1967 (S2) aerial photographs within the area of NHER 24200. There is a relatively large east to west aligned ditch, which dissects the field in two. A second ditch leads approximately south from this ditch, dividing the southern half of the field into quarters. A curvilinear ditch to the north of the major east to west ditch may be surrounding a crude platform. There are the possible traces of ridge and furrow type earthworks across the eastern side of the field.
A field inspection suggested that these are 'enclosures', and may be medieval in date, although this cannot be discerned from the aerial photographs. A curving shallow depression in the west of the field is possibly a naturally formed water channel. These features would appear to be land division boundaries that may date from the medieval or post medieval periods.
M. Brennand (NMP), 31 July 2001.
