Full Description
PART OF THIS SITE WAS PREVIOUSLY RECORDED AS NHER 11264.
1974.
In this pasture traces of building with silted channels. Water mill?
Information through KLM.
E. Rose (NAU).
Field showing great variations in height, apparently due to dumping of earth now overgrown with nettles and rough grass. Whole area boggy. Possible leat seen in field to north. Fenced off for deer farm. No masonry structures seen. Site form in file.
H. Paterson (NAU), 23 March 1991.
Pre February 1990. Earthwork Survey.
Survey of earthworks in area of grassland, on possible site of mill. A wall was also recorded immediately to the south of the land pond at the northern edge of the area. This wall (recorded under NHER 25922) may indicate that this was the location of St Thomas' Chapel.
See published article (S1) and report (S6) for further details.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 9 February 2014.
July 1995. Geophysical Survey.
Resistivity survey of area to south of pond, on possible site of St Thomas' Chapel.
This survey identified a linear anomaly running parallel to the previously identified remains that may represent the footings of a second, related wall. This interpretation was however tentative due to the lack of evidence for any perpendicular, linking walls.
See NHER 25922 and report (S7) for further details. The results of this survey are also noted in (S8).
P. Watkins (HES), 20 March 2017.
July 2001. Norfolk NMP.
There is an extensive linear channel (TF 6920 3301 to 6937 3299) aligned in an east to west direction, running parallel with the River Ingol for a length of 170m (S2). At its eastern end the feature turns at a right angle towards the south, crossing the course of the river, running for a total length of 100m to TF 6936 3289. There is a rectilinear enclosure attached to the northern side of the east to west linear (TF 6928 3302) with an east to west length of 71m and a north to south width of 40m. A pond to the immediate north (NHER 25922) appears to drain into the north-eastern corner of the enclosure. Within the enclosure is a rectangular pit (TF 6929 3302) and a three sided parchmark (TF 33036928) which almost certainly represents the walls of a small structure. This is positioned to the immediate north of the area believed to be the site of a mill, although its position is elevated above the level of the river. To the north a linear feature formed by a ditch with a bank on each side, extends from the pond eastwards and then turns at a right angle towards the south, towards the major east to west linear, forming an elongated rectangular enclosure or field (TF 6935 3305). To the east there is an area of ridge and furrow earthwork (TF 6944 3330), running at a right angle to the river. Additional linear ditches in this area are probably drainage features and are relatively modern in date.
It is not possible to determine whether all of these features are contemporary. They presumably represent a system of land division and water management, although the enclosure does have vague moat intimations. This is a possible site for a mill, although the building recorded in the centre of the enclosure may not actually be the mill building. A medieval or post-medieval date would seem likely for the construction of most of these features, but an earlier date cannot be ruled out.
M. Brennand (NMP), 15 July 2001.
