Full Description
June 2001. Norfolk NMP.
A series of short parallel linear banks are visible on the RAF 1946 vertical aerial photographs (S1), and on more recent NLA oblique (S2-3) and BKS vertical (S4) aerial photographs. These banks range between NGR. TF 6480 3069 and TF 6489 3046; and they cover an area of about 20/50m by 250m. The site is comprised of two rows of banks, with the longest of the banks about 25m in length. There also appears to be around eight linear ditches located amongst the banks (on the same alignment). These two rows are aligned approximately north northwest to south southeast and it is the one to the eastern side that is the longest (ranging between the above grid refs., the western one ranges from NGR. TF6480 3063 to TF6485 3051). The three banks at the southerly end of the western range are roughly square in shape (all the others are linear). The whole of the site seems to be within a large cut away area - ie at a lower level than the rest of the land around it.
The origin and date of these banks and ditches are unknown. However, one possibility could be a military origin - perhaps some form of munitions dump. Alternatively this area might simply be some form of extraction site, perhaps for sand/gravel. (Gravel extraction was taking place nearby - see NHER 13757).
