Map

April 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The centre of the feature is represented by two parallel running parchmarks (TF 7652 4421 to TF 7652 4417) which are aligned in a north to south direction and visible for a length of 38m (S1). The features turn outwards at right angles towards the east and west at their southern end. From the centre of the north to south feature there are single linear banks that run for a distance of approximately 40m to both the west (TF 7648 4418 to 7652 4419) and east (TF 7652 4419 to 7656 4419), forming a cruciform shape. To the east is a curvilinear segment of ditch which may be related to drainage.

The features probably represent narrow banks, levelled by 1946, and it appears that there are fragments of ditch alongside some of the banks. The features are located upon the 5m contour, which is the first area of land raised above the saltmarsh. The features may relate to drainage and or land division from any period, especially as the elevated situation may pre-date the sea banks and saltmarsh reclamation. However, the features seem likely to be relatively modern and may have had an agricultural or horticultural purpose, possibly relating to drainage. This is possibly the site of a World War Two temporary military camp or compound, although it would be likely to date from the earlier part of the 1939-45 period, as nearly all trace has been removed by 1946.
M. Brennand (NMP), 25 April 2002.
