Summary

A series of probable medieval banks are visible as apparent cropmarks on aerial photographs of the area. These cropmarks were formerly part of NHER 1797. These may be part of a system of fishponds, early post medieval garden features, a medieval moated site or an enclosure of unknown date.

May 2002. Norfolk 2002. Norfolk NMP.
A distinctive arrangement of apparent parchmarks that were formerly recorded under NHER 1797. Within the northern part of the site appears to be an approximately rectangular enclosure, formed by extensive banks, with a narrow break or entrance in the northern side (S1). The 'enclosure' is aligned with its long axis in a north to south direction and has a maximum, external length of 42m and an external width of 26m. There are multiple additional banks on each side and running parallel to the sides of the enclosure, forming an apparent system of banks, channels and water management. The surviving features cover an area with a north to south length of 115m and a width of 80m.

These may be part of a system of fishponds but they do not appear typical of the class. Equally they may be early post medieval garden features. It is possible that these cropmarks are reversed and the features interpreted as banks are in fact ditches. This would suggest that the feature is in fact an enclosure of unknown date, or an earlier moated site.
A single, narrow, north to south running linear feature appears to truncate all the other bank like features, and may be a drain of later date.
M. Brennand (NMP), 21 May 2002.
