Full Description
June 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Although the features appear to be visible as earthworks in 1988 (S2), they have already been ploughed by 1969 (S1), and their appearance is presumably caused by growth differentiation of the crop. The features cover an area measuring approximately 350m X 350m, bisected by the course of a former saltmarsh channel. The system likely Post-medieval in date, as prior to the construction of Post-medieval sea defences the area was saltmarsh, and probably not suitable for agriculture. The ridges and furrows were perhaps half drainage, half agricultural, similar to lazybedding. This type of earthwork is not uncommon on the saltmarsh, and is clearly visible further to the east (NHER 36833).
M. Brennand (NMP), 26 June 2002.
