July 2003. Watching Brief and Stray Find.
Found during construction of new flood defences along the eastern bank of the River Yare (Broadland Flood Alleviation Project - Compartment 35).
A hoard of almost 200 16th- and 17th-century coins was found. The coins were initially seen adhering to the tracks of a machine, the remainder of the hoard was found by metal detector. A number of 17th-century pottery pottery sherds were also collected which may have been the remains of the container in which the hoard was deposited.
On at least one coin the head of the King had been crossed out, suggesting that they were buried during the Civil War or the post Civil War period. At the time this was the largest Civil War period hoard found in Norfolk.
