Summary

This site was subject to a programme of investigation carried out in 2004 in advance of construction of a new road. An initial fieldwalking survey recorded a small quantity of prehistoric worked flint including cores, a scraper, a blade, and a knife, as well as small quantities of post-medieval pottery, ceramic building material, and metal objects. Subsequent monitoring of topsoil stripping recorded eight burnt features interpreted as the remains of burnt-out tree stumps of possible post-medieval to modern date and a post-medieval drainage ditch as well as small quantities of post-medieval pottery, ceramic building material, and wine bottle fragments.

February 2004. Systematic Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey. Contexts 1-42.
The flint collected from this site was not particularly diagnostic or datable, but it most likely dates to the later prehistoric period (Later Neolithic to Iron Age). The small knife likely dates to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age.
Finds included:
14 prehistoric struck flints, including 2 cores, 1 blade, 1 scraper, and 1 knife.
1 post-medieval pottery sherd and 1 fragment ceramic building material.
1 post-medieval gunflint.
2 undated coins,1 lead cloth seal,1 fragment worked bone.
5 objects of non-archaeological value.

August 2004. Strip Map and Sample Excavation. Contexts 50-61.
Topsoil stripping for creation of a new roundabout was monitored.
Eight burnt features were recorded within the widest section of the investigated area. These have been interpreted as the remains of burnt-out tree stumps, likely of quite recent date but possibly relating to post-medieval activity. Similar features were record to the north of this site (NHER 40132).
The only other features recorded during the groundworks were a narrow linear feature interpreted as a post-medieval drainage ditch, a deposit associated with the construction of the modern road, and modern plough marks.
Unstratified finds included:
6 sherds post-medieval pottery.
3 fragments of post-medieval brick and tile and 3 fragments of clay tobacco pipe.
3 fragments post-medieval wine bottle.
1 post-medieval to modern heel iron.
See report (S3) for further details.
