NHER 38457 (Monument record) - Site of possible World War Two road block

The site of a possible World War Two road block is visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1). Three parallel dark marks extend for approximately 4.5m across the whole width of the road. The central mark is approximately 2m wide and is flanked by narrower marks, each of which is about 1m wide. On the grass verge on both sides of the road are three areas of disturbed soil that presumably correspond to the adjacent marks on the road. Although this feature does not match any common form of World War Two road block, it is possible that this was the location of some type of obstruction that had been removed or backfilled by 1946. It is also probable that this site was associated with the training area on East Ruston Allotment 500m to the west (NHER 38516). (S1).
