Summary

In 2003 an evaluation excavation found evidence that the ground level at this site was raised through dumping during the 18th century. Estuarine and peat deposits dating to the Iron Age and Roman period were also recorded. Possible prehistoric and Roman pottery sherds were collected, along with medieval and post medieval tiles.

August 2003. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site. From context 1.
No evidence of shoreline structures was revealed. A sequence of dumped deposits sealing the natural probably relate to episodes of ground raising from the 18th century to the present day.
Earlier finds recovered included a ?Late prehistoric pottery sherd and small numbers of redeposited Roman pottery sherds and ceramic building material fragments.
Estuarine clays and Broadland peats were recorded during the 2003 evaluation. The contact between the Broadland Middle Peat and the estuarine clays was radiocarbon dated to between the 9th and 2nd centuries BC (cal 825 to 525 BC and 405 to 180 BC). This is earlier than work elsewhere has suggested (S1), although the erosion of the upper layers of the clays may have led to the early date.
See report (S2) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S3).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2006.296).
