Full Description
August 2003. Trial Trenching.
Two evaluation trenches excavated in advance of proposed redevelopment.
Trench 1 revealed a remnant of a possible medieval flint surface, which was heavily truncated by a later well. Also rubbish pits, foundations and floor surfaces, a robber trench, and a beam slot containing the end of a large timber which had a rectangular, pegged mortice joint holding an upright post, possibly as part of a building.
Trench 2: Medieval pits, including possible quarry pits, a boundary ditch, a baked clay hearth, possible post holes, a mortar wall foundation and a floor were found. There was evidence of late medieval/early post medieval pitting and a robber cut and post medieval cess pits.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (finds accessioned as NWHCM : 2005.11 and documentary archive as NWHCM : 2018.317).
J. Allen (NLA), 16 March 2007. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 26 April 2019.
