Summary

This flint and brick house used to be a row of separate cottages. It was built in the 17th century. The flint and brick rear wing of the house was also built in the 17th century. It has exposed beams inside. A former cottage to the northeast has now been made into an annexe. This also contains exposed beams.

The Knight's Gate, 2 Knight Street.
Formerly a group of cottages, now one house, 17th century flint and brick, south end faced in 19th century brick. Pantile roof. Two storeys, three bays of 19th/20th century windows on main block. Rear wing 17th century flint and brick, one storey and attic, two dormers; has chamfered beams, exposed joists within. Former cottage now annexe to northeast; 17th century flint, pantiles, one storey and attic; dormers; brick stack at each end, the west one large and external. Also has chamfered breams and joists.

Detailed examination after some internal stripping confirms that the main section is early 17th century, with remains of a fireplace; but the south extension seems to be all 19th century unless a predecessor was of lower height; and the rear wing postdates it. The cottage to the northeast was not inspected. Reset medieval carved head to rear.
