Summary

A ring ditch is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. Although the ring ditch itself has not been dated, its form and location in an area of known early prehistoric ceremonial activity suggests strongly that it is the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow.

Map

A ring ditch is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1). It is presumed to represent a Bronze Age round barrow which may have been an outlier from the linear barrow cemetery approximately 80m to its south (NHER 38448). A trackway, which leads towards the ring ditch from the northwest, has been interpreted as part of an Iron Age to Roman settlement and field system (NHER 38463). Given its apparent relationship with this earlier site, however, it seems likely that the track has earlier origins, or that the barrow was deliberately incorporated into the later landscape.
The ring ditch has two concentric ditches, neither of which are visible for their entire circuit, and is slightly sub-circular in plan. The outer ditch has a diameter of 12.5m, the inner of 8m.
