Summary

An alignment of large pits or post holes is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. It is located in an area of known prehistoric ceremonial activity, in close proximity to a Neolithic cursus. A prehistoric date therefore seems likely, although a post medieval origin cannot be ruled out.

Map

February 2004, Norfolk NMP
Five large pits or post holes, forming an alignment oriented east northeast to west southwest, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1). Given their location 40 to 85m to the west of a Neolithic cursus (NHER 18190) and in close proximity to other prehistoric ceremonial or funerary sites (e.g. NHER 11685 and NHER 38475) a prehistoric date for the pits seems likely. The pit at the mid point of the alignment (at TG 2053 3598), however, coincides with a post medieval field boundary, and it is possible that the alignment is contemporary with this later feature.

The alignment is visible for 93m; two pits mapped at TG 2068 3604 (part of NHER 38480) may continue the alignment to the northeast. The pits measure between approximately 3m and 5m in diameter, and are evenly spaced about 22m apart.
