Full Description
March 2004, Norfolk NMP
Two rectilinear enclosures or quarry pits of unknown date are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1) and (S2), centred at TG 2112 3522. They appear to be positioned along the east side of a ditch which forms the west side of a probable trackway of possible Iron Age to Roman date (NHER 38472). They therefore lie within the southern end of the postulated trackway, and while their relationship to the ditch would suggest that they are contemporary with it, the fact that they 'block' the southern end of the track leaves them open to interpretation. Their rather irregular shape is reminiscent of quarry pits.
The northern feature is the most sunken or pit like in appearance. It is roughly square in plan, measuring approximately 14.5m wide. A short linear projection from its north east corner suggests that its eastern side may be formed by the east side of the trackway, but the discontinuous nature of the latter feature makes this far from certain. The southern feature is more likely to be an enclosure, although it could be a pit partially backfilled by a material which is not conducive to producing cropmarks. It is roughly rectangular in plan, and measures 22m long and up to 12m wide. It has a possible entrance on its north side.
