Full Description
2004. Earthwork Rapid Identification Survey.
Norfolk Ancient Woodland Historic Environment Rapid Identification Survey Pilot Study.
Tindall Wood:
Tindall Wood is almost totally surrounded by a substantial wood bank and outer ditch, except in the southwest. Few features within except probable post medieval subdividing bank and ditch and various ponds, some in a line across wood. Others may in part be natural and/or extractive pits.
See report (S1) for further information, including detailed descriptions of the individual features identified (Contexts 1-7). The results of this survey are also summarised in (S2).
B. Cushion, June 2004. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 29 June 2015.
The earthwork banks surrounding the woodland are some of the best preserved in East Anglia and particularly on the north and west boundary where they are up to 9m in diameter, including the ditch, and over 1m high. Those to the south are less substantial but are still likely to be of medieval date. The wood contains numerous ponds, depressions and pits, most of which are probably natural and indicate the wood is primary in nature.
See (S3).
