Summary

An archaeological evaluation in 2003 revealed a complex series of deposits in this area. Occupation appears to have begun in the Norman period, with the construction of a masonry building, possibly a merchant's house. This building was replaced in the 14th century by a more substantial stone structure, which in turn was replaced by a warehouse-type building dating to the early post medieval period. By the middle of the 18th century the area was occupied by small domestic tenements which were demolished prior to construction of the extant Albion Mills building in the 1840s. Closer to the river, evidence for wicker structures was found along the early medieval waterfront. A wooden quay was constructed during the 13th or 14th century, which was replaced during the 15th or 16th century with a brick wall. This area is part of a larger evaulation (NHER 26467) undertaken in 1997.

Within the foundations of this building is a small cess pit, which appears to have been dug and filled shortly before the building was constructed.
