Full Description
December 2003. Site visit.
Group of two mid 18th century houses and outbuildings converted to shops in the 19th century. Said to be fishermen's cottages but evidence for this is not clear.
See (S1) in file.
E. Rose (NLA), 20 December 2003.
July 2007. Preliminary investigation into the buildings becoming part of the museum.
Established that the two principal buildings on the site are of early to mid 19th century date. The block onto St Ann’s Street had a commercial and domestic purpose with a separated shop. It has a single stack at its northern end, one fine shop front and a pair of first floor windows which had sashes with glazing bars recently replaced with aluminium. At the rear of No. 5 there is a warehouse building or factory which may well have supplied the goods sold in the shop next to it. The building was originally timber-framed, strengthened with brick infill and then re-faced with nine-inch brick work. At a slightly later time it was extended by a short distance forming a narrow bay divided from the rest of the building. The brick work changes at this point. Two small windows immediately next to each other suggest that some industrial activity requiring ventilation may have taken place. On extending the building the opportunity was taken to enclose the yard incorporating a gateway into True’s Yard. Also probably at about this time a link was built between the warehouse and the house.
The buildings will no doubt reveal more of their history and function as works take place.
They remain a valuable survival of old North End which has suffered great losses during the last century.
See (S2).
