NHER 40330 (Building record) - Eastgate Farm, Scarborough Road

February 1979. Listed, Grade II.
Listed as Eastgate House and described as c1840 of buff brick and slate roof; parapet and moulded cornice with pilasters. Three bays, central bay projecting. Sash windows and central door. Two N wings, one buff brick, one flint and brick.

Plaque on east gable wall with WD also stated by owner to bear date 1860. Two windows on each level in this wall, one of each blocked. Interior has nothing of note except good stick baluster stair in centre. Northeast wing is in fact all of 19th century brick on east wall and has on north gable a reset medieval carving of a monk’s head. Northwest wing, of buff brick, seems to be around 1900 and has carving of lily pot, ?recent. Small visible part of north wall of main block might be pre 1860. Barns to east and southeast of various dates within 18th/19th centuries have much reused stonework, in places forming fossil quoins; one particularly good fragment of possible coffin slab with fleurons in building east of house. Even a 20th century Dutch barn stands on limestone blocks.
