Map

April 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of a north to south ditch, probably a medieval to post medieval field boundary, and an undated ditch are visible on aerial photographs (S1). A faint cropmark of a north to south ditch extends for 345m between TG 3775 2870 and TG 3779 2904. The northern section of this ditch is shown on the 1834 Happisburgh tithe map (S2), suggesting it is a medieval to post medieval field boundary. The position of the cropmark appears to correspond with the edge of Happisburgh Common depicted on Faden's 1797 map of Norfolk (S3). The crop to the west of the ditch appears generally darker, possibly supporting the interpretation that this area was former common land. Perhaps coincidentally, this ditch appears to have the same alignment as a ditch cropmark along the the parish boundary 470m to the south (NHER 38591). The second ditch extends for 215m on a slightly curving alignment between TG37902890 to TG38112897. Its date and function are unknown.
