Summary

Site of a former canning factory, founded in 1934 and closed in 2002. Old photographs suggest it may have originally been powered by a windmill and later by steam. Later structures on the site included a 1960s concrete warehouse said to be the largest unsupported roof in Europe. The factory went out of use around 2002 and was demolished by 2011. It is now occupied by a housing development and business park.

Map

Photograph in journal article by B. Funnell (S1) shows a brick tower windmill in process of demolition in 1940. Funnell (S1) suggests that this was the original power for the baked bean factory, founded in 1934. It also states that the area was previously known as Millfields; 1928 25 inch Ordnance Survey map marks a sawmill here, but nothing resembling the windmill. Photograph also shows a chimney that might indicate a steam engine. Later history of factory is given, including a 1960s concrete warehouse said to be the largest unsupported roof in Europe; this may be reused elsewhere, otherwise factory closed in 2002.
E. Rose (NLA), 1 December 2003.

Google Earth aerial imagery (S2) confirms that the entirety of the factory site had been demolished by May 2011. By September 2017 (S3) much of the former site had been covered by a new housing development, and by March 2021 (S4) the Hornbeam Business Park had been constructed on the eastern postion.
It is unlikely that any of the original buildings now remain.
H. Hamilton (HES), 10 February 2026.
