Full Description
April 2004. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed A11 Flood Compensation Area. From Context 1.
Four out of the ten excavated trenches revealed archaeological features.
A total of four linear features and two pits were found. All were undated, but are possibly prehistoric or associated with enclosure of former commons.
Three worked flint artefacts, twenty-five pieces of burnt flint, a coin of Charles II, a copper alloy coin and three lead fishing weights were recovered.
See report (S1) for details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2018.192).
D. Robertson (NLA) 20 February 2006. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 2 July 2015 and 27 April 2019.
September 2005. Excavation.
Excavation at the 'Flood Compensation Area' associated with A11 Attleborough Bypass Improvement scheme.
A significant number of linear and discrete features were recorded, although the majority produced no dating evidence.
The various ditches and gullies were mostly aligned north-to-south and north-east to south-west and were all undated. It is possible that some at the northern end of the eastern excavation area were associated with a number of cropmarks visible on aerial photographs of this location (part of a group of probable medieval to post-medieval remains recorded under NHER 20028).
Numerous possible pits and post-holes were recorded, the majority of which lay within two distinct clusters in the western excavation area. These also produced few finds, notable exceptions being a pit that produced single fragments of medieval pottery and fired clay and a large pit filled with post-medieval brick. A fragment of post-medieval tile was also noted on the surface of another pit.
See report (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
Originally assigned NHER 41964 (now revoked).
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2025.173).
P. Watkins (HES), 18 May 2022 and 31 August 2025.
