Full Description
April 2004. Trial Trench.
Evaluation of proposed development site. From Context 1.
Alluvial silts and the presence of a number of relict stream channels associated with saltmarsh conditions were recorded. Reclamation of the marsh in the medieval period was represented by layers of dumped material. A wall foundation probably dating to the 17th century was also recorded.
A broken but almost complete glass wine bottle bearing seal of Richard Archbald and dated 1707 was also found. It is unusual to find such bottles with a seal and date, though several examples are known from Norwich.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2). See also (S3).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2016.187).
