Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
There are cropmarks of linear features and pits/hollows to be seen in the field that was formerly Church wood. These are visible on BKS aerial photographs from 1988 (S1) and on NLA aerial photographs from 1977 (S2). Additional features that have not been plotted in detail can be seen on OS 1970 aerial photographs (S4) (only the most distinct of these features have been included - the rest were not that clear), therefore an extent of area has also been put around the field to denote that there are other features.
The date and origin of these features are uncertain. They have an irregular appearance and could relate to woodland features and/or to Post-medieval landscaping of some form. It seems likely that this site is connected to the Warham Old Hall (NHER 1843) and its grounds. This area is shown to be wooded on Biederman's map of 1789 (S5) and it remains wooded on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S3).
There is also the possibility that some of the features are related to drainage? In addition to this some of the apparent pit/hollow features are slightly blurry, and they might be connected to the underlying geology, however, as they appeared distinct enough they have been plotted. (There may also be additional features in the southern area of the field, but as these are fairly indistinct they have not been plotted)
