Map

September 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of possible enclosed site centred on TF 6820 3651, visible on 1946 RAF aerial photographs (S1). The main enclosure appears to be approximately square measuring 37 by 40m. Several features and possible co-joined enclosed areas appear to be attached to this. To the north is a 20m square area. The site appears to be defined by parched linears, however, the cropmarks are a little unclear. This is not helped by the fact that the field has a succession of tramlines in differing directions and these have a similar appearance to the supposed parched linears. It is therefore possible that the linears of the enclosure are also the product of this process that has fortuitously created an enclosure-like pattern. However, the main linears of the enclosure do have several abutting features, bit inside and out, defining internal subdivisions and co-joining features. It is not clear whether the parched linears represent banks or walls. One of the linears running from TF 6818 3655 to TF 6818 3649 appears to start out as one of the main parched features and then seems to become reversed towards the top of the enclosure. It is possible that a ditch section abuts up to it, although it may be indicative of cropmark reversal.
The exact nature of the site is unsure, because the structure of the enclosure is not known. It is possibly a banked or walled complex of co-joined enclosed areas and linears. It is possible that it is a Roman enclosure, possibly even a villa site, although on the present evidence this sort of interpretation cannot be applied without a great deal of caution. Also this site is not visible on any other available aerial photographs, therefore much more photography would be needed.
