Full Description
CROPMARKS PREVIOUSLY RECORDED UNDER NHER 13010.
April 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The original NHER description for NHER 1479 refers to 1946 Ordnance Survey photography, dated 27 June. Although RAF aerial photographs were taken in the area on 27 June 1946, none have been located within the NLA collection. RAF 1946 7 June photography does not appear to show any significant cropmarks. However the 1967 Ordnance Survey photographs (S1) and Ordnance Survey from 1973 (S2) do reveal a cropmark site. So it is probably that the earlier reference is to these and not any of a 1946 date. The site appears to consist of a main, sinuous linear ditch from TF 6880 3514 to TF 6928 3509, approximately 550m long and between 2m and 4m in width. Several linears run up to this feature. At TF 6896 3522 is a sub-rectangular enclosure, also co-joined to the main ditch. This has rounded corners and is 60m by 50m. There is a break in its eastern side, this may be a gap in the cropmark or an actual entrance feature. At TF 6927 3517 is another co-joined curvilinear feature, which encloses a small triangular shaped area of land. This central ditch with associated boundaries and enclosures is probably part of a field system of unknown date, however it is possible that it is medieval in date. SMR 1479 records the finding of finds within the area of the cropmarks, ranging from Roman to post medieval, but many medieval material.
