A series of undated linear features probably representing field boundaries, visible as cropmarks on 1961 Meridian Airmaps vertical aerial photographs. These features are within NHER 3354.
There are a series of cropmark features visible on (S1) within the area defined by NHER 3354. There are three lengths of approximately east to west aligned bank, which may be low earthworks, but are probably cropmarks. The three features are equidistant from each other and are probably strip field or allotment boundaries. There is a single ditch aligned in an approximately north to south direction, visible for a length of 40m. A short fragment of ditch to the immediate west is on the same alignment, and may be contemporary with the other. The two sets of features are not at accurate right angles to one another are unlikely to be contemporary, and part of the same system of land division.
The three banks are likely to represent strip field boundaries running at right-angles from the current A10 Main Road, and may date from the medieval period. The single north to south aligned ditch is probably earlier. The surface of the field appears to be generally uneven and undulating, although there is little discernible trace of any distinct mounds as described above. This suggests that the field had been ploughed by 1948, although it does not appear so in 1961 (S1).
M. Brennand (NMP), 9 June 2003.
