Map

1936. Aerofilms air photographs.
Siltland edge between Puny Drain and River Nar.
Pattern of linear features, recorded on NCM map by R. R. Clarke (NCM). Features look very similar to medieval strip fields at Elm, Cambs. Original photographs not seen.
A. Gregory (NAU), 4 February 1980.

However the south end of the area of markings visible on Ordnance Survey air photograph 1988 is very different from how Clarke has drawn it on the map, yet similar enough to show they are the same markings. Perhaps Clarke's photograph was not clear. Copy of Ordnance Survey print in file.

These features were formerly recorded under NHER 15867. The western area of the site is divided by a system of ditches into rectangular enclosures and relatively narrow east to west aligned strips of land or fields (S1 and S2). The strips vary in width from 20m to 48m. The southern part of this area also has a north to south aligned ditch running down the centre, further subdividing the fields. There is a double ditched track or drove crossing the centre of the site, in an east to west direction. The north-western side of this area is bounded by a ditched drain or channel. There is the possible trace of a ring ditch at TF 6196 1702, with a possible diameter of 16m. This may be the remains of a stack base. Although these features appear similar to medieval strip fields, they may actually be Post-medieval in date, and the ditches may serve as a drains aiding the drainage and reclamation of this area.
To the immediate west is a possible square enclosure (centre TF 6189 1700), utilising the same drain or channel that forms the western side of the strip fields as its eastern side (S1). The enclosure is probably formed by a single ditch, although there are traces of a narrow, inner ditch on the northern and southern sides. The feature encloses an area measuring approximately 40m X 41m. There is a possible break or causeway in the centre of the western side. This feature is more likely to be a simple ditched enclosure, rather than a moat, possibly providing a dry area on the Nar flood plain. It may the site of a small dwelling or shieling but may simply be an enclosure for stock. A Post-medieval date seems likely for this feature, although an earlier date cannot be ruled out.
M. Brennand (NMP), 11 June 2003.
