Map

June 2003. NMP.
The enclosure is sub rectangular in plan with its long axis aligned in an approximate north to south direction (S1). The feature has a length of 39m and a width of 32m, with a possible entrance or break in the ditch line at the eastern end of the southern side. There is a large sub rounded positive cropmark within the interior of the enclosure, which may be a pond, extractive pit or a natural feature. From the southeast corner of the enclosure there is a linear parchmark running southwards for a length of 82m The feature appears to have a narrow ditch down each side and may represent a bank or less likely a road.
The date and function of the enclosure and the probable bank are uncertain. This unlikely to be a moat, but may be a stack or settlement enclosure dating from the medieval or post medieval periods. At this time this location would haven been a saltmarsh, close to the northern bank of the River Great Ouse, but protected from its waters by a bank (NHER 21808).
M. Brennand (NMP), 24 June 2003.
