Full Description
October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
There appears to be the remains of two areas of ridge and furrow visible on NLA aerial photographs from 1984 (S1). The northern area of these features can also just be determined on AAF aerial photographs from 1977 (S2). The date of this is not certain. However, it seems likely to be of approximately post medieval date because some of it overlies probable medieval features of NHER no. 1850; also the ridge and furrow seems to be relatively straight and regular. The northern area is located around NGR TF9451 4064 and is about 170m x 60m in size. The southern area is located around NGR TF9460 4034 and has an area of about 300m x 100m. A further possible area of ridge and furrow may be visible further to the south on the 1988 BKS images (S3), located at NGR TF9452 4009 and about 145m x 120m in size. This area also appears very straight and narrow.
Although it seems likely that these are the remains of post-medieval ridge and furrow, there is always the possibility that this is actually due to more recent drainage as the River Stiffkey is located near by, and there are drains evident in these fields already.
