NHER 38729 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Cropmarks of probable Bronze Age ring ditch

A cropmark of a ring ditch, probably a Bronze Age round barrow, is visible on aerial photographs ((S1) to (S2)). This cropmark was previously recorded as part of NHER 21773. It has a diameter of 28m and a possible entrance on its northeast side. The ring ditch or barrow has been used as the focus of a later, probably Iron Age to Roman, trackway and field system (NHER 38730). This suggests that the barrow was still a prominent feature in the landscape in the Roman period and may still have had a ritual significance. However, the continuation of the trackway across the the ring ditch, perhaps indicates that the barrow mound, if ever present at all, was not very high by that time. Ditches associated with the trackway obscure part of the ring ditch cropmark making it impossible to identify whether any other entrances are present. Other ring ditch cropmarks are present to the southeast (NHER 38731) and southwest (NHER 38728).
