Full Description
August 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of undated, medieval, post medieval and possible Iron Age to Roman, ditches and field systems are visible on aerial photographs ((S1) to (S3)). These cropmarks were previously recorded as part of NHER 11877 and are centred on TG 3921 2950. Rectilinear enclosures forming a north to south and west to east aligned field system of post medieval date are present around the central grid reference. Parts of this field system surrounding Mill Farm are shown on the 1834 Happisburgh tithe map (S4). However, the field system is clearly earlier than that date as some of the west to east boundaries are crossed by the line of the modern road, which is shown on its present course on that map. This field system overlies a medieval or earlier post medieval pattern on a northwest to southeast alignment (NHER 39169) and an undated possible trackway and ditches (NHER 39170). Not all of the north to south and west to east aligned ditches can be positively associated with the post medieval field system. In particular rectilinear enclosures around TG 3928 2933 are undated. Although some elements of these enclosures appear to link to the post medieval field system, others may be of Iron Age to Roman date and are perhaps associated with a field system of this date 500m to the northwest (NHER 38744).
