Full Description
Small building in northwest corner of the grounds of Whiteacres.
Aligned north to south along road, brick wall runs east from northeast corner (perhaps once with sheds now removed). Red brick, with horizontal skintlings; English bond, the inner wall faces including solider courses. Plinth to east wall where land drops away; dentilled cornices. Thatched roof (remade). At north end east wall is a doorway, perhaps later; to south are two square windows but the wall below them is remade in 20th century bricks. Eyebrow dormers in thatch to east and west. South wall has door. West wall has door at north end and by it is a splayed gunslit, the inner face a simple square outlined in wood. Similar gunslit in north wall with 20th century brick alterations. Roof hipped; principals with mortices for removed collars; staggered butt purlins with some mortices, present collars are nailed. Tie beams rest on top of walls and are not related to the roof. Two internal partitions of solider courses and softwood members; one of these is extended to the roof in laths, the other is to eaves height alone. Saddle hooks in south chamber. Building is of unknown origin but perhaps a stable, dating to about 1820.
Unusual feature of dormers without an upper floor presumably an alteration to give more light; assumed to have been fortified during World War Two.
