Full Description
August 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of undated curvilinear enclosures, ditches, field boundaries and a possible trackway are visible on aerial photographs (S1 to S2). These cropmarks are concentrated around, and to the east of, TG 3600 3042. Two adjoining curvilinear enclosures are located at TG 3597 3047. These two enclosures are sub-rectangular in form and adjoin a northwest to southeast aligned ditch on their southwest side. The northernmost enclosure measures 24m by 16m with a possible entrance on its northwest side. The second enclosure measures 23m by 25m and is formed by a curving ditch to the south of the first enclosure. The ditch to which these enclosures are attached extends for 70m northwest to southeast before turing southwest intermittently for a further 74m. A number of other linear ditches including one double ditch also share this southwest to northeast alignment between TG 3594 3037 and TG 3610 3048. The double ditch may represent a narrow trackway or field boundary. The alignment of these features is similar to a trackway and coaxial field system, of possible Roman date, recorded further to the west (NHER 21775). It is possible that these enclosures and ditches may also be of Iron Age to Roman date. Further linear ditches on a northwest to southeast and southwest to northeast alignment are present to the east of the main concentration of enclosures and ditches. These ditches are likely to represent field boundaries of similar or possibly later date.
