Summary

Possible rectilinear enclosures or field boundaries are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Too little of the site is visible to be confident of its date and function, but it may be associated with a series of probable pastoral enclosures of unknown date approximately 500m to the east (NHER 13064). Alternatively, the northeast to southwest orientation of its ditches suggests that it could form part of the extensive field system to its northeast (NHER 38808) which may date to the Roman period. The cropmarks are only visible on one set of vertical aerial photographs, however, and their archaeological origin is not certain.

Map

September 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A series of ditches, perhaps defining enclosures or fields, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 2337 3848. Their general orientation suggests that they might form an outlying part of one of the extensive field systems to the east (NHER 38808) which may date to the Romano-British period. It is at odds with that of the post medieval field system which is visible over the same area (NHER 38807). Alternatively, the rounded corners of the postulated enclosures is similar to those of the possible sheep folds or stock enclosures of unknown date identified to the east (NHER 13064).

The cropmarks are visible over an area measuring approximately 112.5m by 90m. The most complete enclosure or field is at least 98m long and 67m wide.
