Map

March 2004. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of three trial holes following demoliton of the Old Shoe Factory at 120-122 Magdalen Street. From Context 1.
Evidence of 19th- or 20th-century cellars and floor surfaces was revealed. A possible infilled cellar demonstrated that the site had been levelled, probably during the late post-medieval to modern period. No archaeological finds were associated with these deposits.
See report (S1) for further details.
A. Cattermole (NLA), 5 November 2007.

NIAS records:
The current factory was built in 1906, but architectural evidence shows that this was built on top of an older building (the cellars discovered in 2007). City directories list this property as a maltings in 1867. Maps from before 1867 show no building on the site, however maps from 1885 onwards do.
The only remains of the malthouse are incorporated into the ground floor of the newer factory. The part adjacent to the road was also built on but all traces of the malthouse were demolished before construction took place.
See (S2).
The full extent of the malthouse is visible on the 1st ed. 1ins O.S. map (1888) (S3).
