Full Description
September 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A group of earthworks of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs (S1) and located in the Hall Wood within Cromer Park (NHER 33460). The earthworks appear to consist of a linear bank and a semi-circular embankment and are centred on TG 2143 4177. Other earthworks within the woods have been identified as dating to World War Two (NHER 38812), although there is no conclusive evidence for this site also being of that period. As there are no visible signs of disturbed ground or recently constructed earthworks on the wartime photographs, which are usually indicative of military sites within woodland. It is possible that they are earlier and post medieval in date and related to activities or industries associated with the Hall taking place within the woods.
The bank is 30m long and up to 2.5m wide and is aligned northeast to southwest. To the immediate south of this, centred on TG 2142 4176, is a semi-circular bank, 2m wide and forming a half circle 13m in diameter.
S. Massey (NMP), 27 September 2004.
This may be connected with an icehouse mound. (S2) seems to show the icehouse at NHER 42571 but it is not clear that this is the actual location.
E. Rose (NLA), 6 December 2005.
