Map

October 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two pillbox or gun emplacement is visible on aerial photographs situated at the intersection of the two paths coming down the cliff towards Cromer Pier (S1 and S2). This structure was constructed between October 1940 (S3) and August 1941 (S1-2). The structure is not clearly visible on the June 1942 vertical aerial photographs (S4), so it may have been destroyed by then and it is certainly gone by June 1946 (S5). Several other pillboxes (NHER 38850) also defend the end of the pier below. Additional pillboxes were also positioned along the promenade at regular intervals (NHER 32576, 38832-3, 38857-8).

The pillbox or gun emplacement is located at TG 2193 4233 and consists of an angular wall up 1m wide, which forms a C shaped structure 4m across, with a slightly projecting end covering the entrance. This may have acted as a blast wall. The structure has no visible roof on any of the available aerial photographs. It is not whether a roof was ever intended or constructed.
