NHER 38919 (Monument record) - World War Two structure

A possible World War Two structure is visible on aerial photographs within an area of allotments to the south of Suffield Park, Cromer. However the identification of this structure as being military is not certain, as it may have related to allotment activity. The structure is located at TG 2263 4079, is 4m square and has the light appearance of a concrete structure. The structure has the general appearance and dimensions of a type 20 pillbox. Although it’s placing within a fairly compact area of allotments to the rear of a row of houses does not seem particularly strategic. However the structure is 75m to the north of a military site, consisting of a gun emplacement and several buildings (NHER 38918). It is located near to the railway track but not in a position to provide defensive fire. Another possibility is that it is air raid shelter, previously covered and in the process of being removed, as the structure is visible in April 1946 (S1) and has gone by December 1946 (S2).
