Full Description
October 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A possible World War Two pillbox or similar defensive structure may be visible as a camouflaged feature located at the junction of Cromwell Road and Overstrand Road in 1942. The site is centred on TG 2245 4153. This possible structure is visible as a dark, possibly covered mound, which is roughly circular or polygonal in shape, 5m across. This has a conjoined triangular covered area to the west, which joins with the side of the road. This site is not visible on later aerial photographs. Too little can be seen of this feature to identify it confidently, although it is possible that it is pillbox or similar gun position defending and partially blocking the road junction in and out of Cromer. A similar feature may also have been placed blocking the western end of Cromwell Road (NHER 38913). Contemporary photographs illustrate the Home Guard exercises involving road blocks and anti tank blocks on the Overstrand Road in the early years of the war, although they do not appear to show this location (Brooks, 1988:26-7).
