Summary

A World War Two pillbox is visible as a standing structure on aerial photographs taken in June 1942. Its absence from an earlier set of photographs indicates that it was constructed after September 1940. It overlooked Loop Road and presumably the cliffs beyond, and formed part of the extensive World War Two coastal defences identified in the area (e.g. NHER 38936). It appears to have been demolished by 1946, by which time a new road and a second pillbox (NHER 38950) had been constructed to the south.

Map

November 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two pillbox is visible as a standing structure on aerial photographs taken in 1942 (S1), centred at TG 2813 3879. It is not visible on an oblique aerial photograph taken in September 1940 (S2) and must have been constructed after that date. Later aerial photographs indicate that it was demolished by 1946. It is likely to have been polygonal in plan but has been mapped as a circular feature as its form is not clear on the consulted aerial photographs. It measured up to 3.7m wide.
