Summary

The summer warden's house was designed by architect Edward Boardman in 1926. Built of Norfolk oak weatherboarding, beach pebble and brick it has a shingled roof and stands on stilts. There is a south porch and later extensions to the north. The tall pebble chimney was struck by lightning around 1960 and has since been rebuilt.

Summer warden's house by Edward Boardman (famous Norfolk architect) 1926. Norfolk oak weatherboarding, beach pebble, brick with shingled roof (shingle here means wooden tiles, not stuff from the beach). Single storey square plan with south porch and later north extensions. Built on stilts, rabbits get in beneath floor. Tall pebble chimney struck by lightning around 1960 and rebuilt. Interior entirely wood lined, one living room, two bunk rooms, all original fittings except one plastic doorknob. Building financed by public subscription, architect and timber merchant made no charge, for Norfolk Naturalists Trust (now leased to English Nature). Faces south across flats, set into dunes on north. Listed 2004 as a building in a unique landscape, almost unaltered, and one of the smallest to be architect designed.
