NHER 38943 (Monument record) - World War Two pillbox

A possible World War Two pillbox is visible on aerial photographs set into the Cliff at Cromer in 1941 (S1). This structure forms part of a much wider system of coastal defences along the cliffs at Cromer (NHER 32566, 38935, 38940 & 38944).

The possible pillbox is located at approximately TG 2289 4183. The structure was only partially visible on one oblique aerial photographs aerial photograph (S1) and therefore the mapped size and location are approximations, using other known features visible on vertical aerial photographs as a guide. The structure appears to be roughly hexagonal in shape, although this is not certain due to its partially dug in position. This may indicate that it is a type 22 pillbox. This structure is not visible on any later aerial photographs, although even a light movement in the cliff face could potentially have destroyed or at least covered the structure.
