Full Description
December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of an incomplete undated field system, of possible medieval or earlier date, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-2). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3098 3244 and were previously recorded as part of NHER 6893. The cropmarks are aligned southwest to northeast and extend for up to 410m. Their fragmentary nature makes it difficult to determine the true size of individual fields within the system. However the ditches that are visible indicate widths varying between 19m and 98m. Two parallel ditches at TG 3100 3253 may represent a trackway on the same alignment as the fields. A pit, which may be associated with the field system is located at TG 3100 3248. The northern part of the field system cuts across a Romano-British enclosure complex (NHER 39016). Its alignment is similar to that of a possible medieval enclosure to the southwest (NHER 34544) and probable Romano-British to medieval field systems to the west (NHER 39009) and north (NHER 39010). It is possible that this field system is of similar date. These cropmarks cross the Paston and Bacton (formerly Edingthorpe) parish boundary, which also suggests an early date.
