Map

December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of an undated, probably medieval or earlier, ditch defined road or trackway are visible on aerial photographs (S1-3). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3045 3347 and were previously recorded as part of NHER 12818. This road or trackway is intermittently visible for at least 620m on a northwest to southeast alignment between TG 3024 3369 and TG 3069 3328. Its central part is well defined with ditches visible on both sides of its course. The northwest and southeast ends are less clear, with single ditches marking only one side of the route. This trackway does not align with Knapton Old Hall, as suggested in the original record, but appears continue past it, across Hall Lane, towards the northwest. It is not marked Faden’s 1797 map (S4) or any later maps examined. It has been suggested that Hall Lane is a Roman Road (NHER 41037). If this is the case, it might indicate that the trackway is of pre-Roman, possibly Iron Age or Bronze Age, date. The trackway is crossed by an angled section of ditch defined road of probable post medieval date (NHER 39055) suggesting that it is at least of medieval date.
