Map

Cropmarks of an undated, possibly Iron Age to Roman or medieval to post medieval, rectangular enclosure and associated ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S1-3). This enclosure is centred on TG 3068 3358 and was previously recorded as part of NHER 12818. The enclosure is rectangular in plan with rounded corners. It is defined by a single ditch, which measures up to 1.5m in width. The enclosure is aligned on a southwest to northeast axis and is situated on a southeast-facing slope. Its external dimensions are 115m by 90m, with an internal area of 113m by 87m. A single entrance, measuring 6m wide and defined by swollen ditch terminals, is located roughly centrally on the southeast side. Just inside the entrance are two possible pits, each measuring between 1.5m and 2m across. It is likely that these are related to the entrance and could indicate a structure or ritual activity. A former railway line (NHER 13585) cuts across the southern corner of the enclosure. Extending from the eastern corners of the enclosure are two ditches. The southeastern ditch is intermittently visible for a distance of up to 120m towards the southeast. The northern ditch is only visible for 20m up to the former railway line. The simple rectangular form of the enclosure, and the absence of any associated finds, makes it difficult to date accurately or suggest its purpose. It is possible that the enclosure is of Iron Age to Roman date, but it could also be of medieval to early post medieval date.
