Full Description
December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of an undated rectilinear field system are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3095 3391. Fragmentary cropmarks of field boundary ditches are present across area measuring 300m by 260m. The majority of these ditches are on a parallel roughly west to east alignment. North to south aligned ditches are present defining incomplete fields in the southeast of this group of cropmarks. Only one field, at TG 3102 3382, is sufficiently complete to allow its dimensions to be suggested. This field comprises an elongated rectangle measuring 30m wide by a possible 130m long. Incomplete fields are present immediately to its north and south. Further incomplete fields are present in the northern part of this group at TG 3101 3401. A roughly west to east ditch in the south of the group at TG 3095 3380 appears to cut across one of the north to south aligned ditches. It seems to continue the line of a ditch further to the west. These ditches suggest that more than one phase of activity is represented by these cropmarks. However the alignments are so similar that it is impossible to determine which elements belong to which phase. The date of these field system cropmarks is not certain. Their southeast corner overlaps with another field system on a different alignment (NHER 39085). Additionally they do not conform to the surviving post medieval field pattern and cross over the Knapton and Paston parish boundary. This suggests that they are probably of an early, possibly Roman to medieval, date.
