Full Description
December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of an undated, possibly medieval to post medieval, field system are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3129 3383. Parallel ditches aligned northwest to southeast and two ditches on a southwest to northeast alignment are present across an area measuring 485m by 190m. It is likely that these represent the fragmentary remains of a field system of unknown date. Two parallel ditches at TG 3106 3382 may represent a trackway, which continues to the northwest into Knapton parish as an extant track and footpath. However, it is also possible that these parallel ditches represent a double ditched field boundary. The visible cropmarks suggest that the field to the northeast has a possible width of 60m. However, the cropmarks are too incomplete to allow the full dimensions of any fields to be determined. The field boundaries in the western end of the group appear to respect and lie perpendicular to the Knapton and Paston parish boundary. However, they overlap with another undated field system, which extends further to the west (NHER 39084). Cropmarks at the eastern end of the group, at TG 3149 337, suggest that the field system continues to the east of a post medieval road and is crossed by modern field boundaries. The date of the field system is uncertain, but could be medieval to early post medieval. Undated ditches, apparently not connected to this field system are present at TG 3118 3383 and TG 3135 3384.
